How to Make a Staycation Honeymoon Extra Special

Britain’s travel ban was officially lifted on 17 May. But with only a limited number of countries currently on the ‘green list’ and the international COVID situation constantly shifting, many 2021 brides and grooms are still choosing to go local for their honeymoon or taking a short local mini-moon with a longer break abroad later on. While your dreams of sipping fruity cocktails on a Caribbean beach or watching the sunset in Santorini might be on hold for a little longer, having a honeymoon close to home doesn’t mean you have to give up any of the honeymoon magic you’ve been looking forward to. Here are 7 ways to make your staycation honeymoon extra special, memorable, and fun!

Make your accommodation special. The accommodation you choose for your local honeymoon doesn’t have to be expensive or far away. But it should be something you’ll both love, whether that means glamping in a yurt, staying in a unique Airbnb, or splurging on a beautiful boutique hotel. If possible, spend a little more for extra amenities or features. And be sure to let them know you’re celebrating your honeymoon! Even smaller hotels usually provide something complimentary for newlyweds.

Pack a honeymoon. Let’s be honest, part of the fun of going on honeymoon is shopping for your holiday wardrobe. Even though you’re staying local, you can still dress as if you were on distant shores. Buy a few special pieces for dressy dinners, sun and sightseeing, and the bedroom, of course!

Enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Who doesn’t love a road trip? They’re a great way to enjoy each other’s company, make memories, and see a few places you might not have been to before. Make a playlist, pack a picnic (or stop for goodies as you go), and enjoy the ride!

Document it. Don’t forget to get that camera out! Treat your location honeymoon the same way you would a trip to an exotic location. Take loads of pics, keep travel mementos, and be sure to print them out or make a photo book when you get home. Another great idea is to book an on-location couple shoot. (And why not treat yourself to a professional hair and makeup session while you’re at it?)

Turn off your phones. Your honeymoon is all about the two of you, in a little world of your own. This is the perfect time to take some time away from work and social media, unplug, and just focus on each other. Even if you need your phone to snap some pictures (see above), consider keeping it on airplane mode.

Splurge on a few meals and experiences. Even if you’re in familiar territory, this is your chance to act like tourists. Make a booking at the best restaurant in town or book a typical honeymoon-style activity like a couple’s massage or a hot air balloon. When else will you get the chance?

Have an adventure. This is the time for making your first memories as a married couple, so make it count! There are so many ways to inject some extra excitement into your trip, wherever you are. Go somewhere or do something you never have before. Watch a sunrise, a sunset, or a sky full of stars. Head out into the great outdoors. Be spontaneous. Create a sneaky surprise for your new spouse. Whatever you do, approach it with a spirit of adventure!
